Surrounded by golden hillsides, a busy highway paves its way around the bustling cities of the Bay Area. Just beyond the road, hidden between the dips and rises of the gentle terrain, lies a vine-covered escape that demands discovery. Seemingly a world away, the quiet country setting of Nella Terra Cellars would be well suited for a painter’s inspired vision. The 100-acre property is sweetened by the story of its founding. Gerry Beemiller, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, purchased the original Bunting Hereford Ranch in Sunol after seeing a for-sale sign along the highway. As a gentleman cattle rancher, he took joy in sharing the beauty and serenity of his ranch with his wife Paulette and three children. As their children budded past their youth, the empty nesters mused with the thought of downsizing. But as Gerry stood in his living room soaking up the breathtaking view of Mt. Diablo and the surrounding hills, he said aloud, “I’m not ready to leave this place.” The cattle ranch embraced its new purpose as a vineyard, and as a nod to Gerry’s Italian heritage, was reborn as Nella Terra—meaning, “into the earth.” With the back bowl of the verdant property seamlessly transformed with two and a half acres of Pinot Noir and Viognier vines, Nella Terra Cellars offers its guests the same hospitality it has provided the Beemiller family for years.

The natural landscape at Nella Terra Cellars proves no need for added arrangements. Here, the hills’ lively shades of green seem to slope endlessly, meeting the shifting blue of the California sky in a comforting medley of color. Small dots of cattle mark one hillside as rows and rows of promising grape vines climb up another. An impressive 75-step staircase is set among the vines, formed from rustic stone that originates from the vineyard itself. Draped in sinewy grape vines, the wooden arbor at the top of the hill marks the first descending step. At the foot of the steps, a dainty pergola sits atop a peaceful pond bordered by delicate bundles of flowers and grass. As the day fades, the effect of the waterside site is intensified with an orange glow set by the retreating sun. A walk along the path surrounding the pond reveals a small bridge with water tumbling down a crowd of stones in the background. Further in, a tree wrapped in lights provides a tranquil resting spot for all those who come across it. Romantically simple, the lush splendor of the surroundings effortlessly translates into photos, experiences, and memories. On the opposite edge of the water, a dramatic, white pavilion creates a space for a celebration under the stars.
