A wine country haven is found in the heart of Sonoma County, carefully folded into the sunkissed curves of the sprawling, verdant hillside. Hovering over the layers of green and gold of the Russian River Valley, it’s no surprise as to why Paradise Ridge Winery’s founder gave this family-operated winery its namesake. As part of a vibrant Northern California region that is home to hundreds of artisans, towering Redwoods, and fragrant vines, Paradise Ridge Winery embraces Sonoma County’s signature rustic, spirited atmosphere. The winery’s founders, Walter and Marijke Byck, discovered this piece of treasure in 1978 after more than a year of searching for a ranch where their five children could camp, hike, and fish. The story of Paradise Ridge Winery began the night Walter came home with rain dripping from his coat and said, “Marijke, children…I have seen Paradise!” The Byck family’s love of wine, combined with a growing alliance with the incredible region they now called home, encouraged Walter and Marijke to start their own vineyards and eventually their own winery in 1994.
A stroll past ancient oaks and rows of graceful vines leads to the winery building, noted by its unique Californian architecture. A leaf-shaped deck rests among lush greenery, framed by wooden benches that curve along its edges and shaded by a majestic oak tree stretching out from the corner. Near sundown, hanging lanterns create an enchanting glow over this popular cocktail area. One step onto the adjoining mahogany veranda reveals breathtaking views of the vineyards, the Russian River Valley, and far beyond to the Bay. The veranda is also the best spot to admire the winery’s world-class sculpture garden, including the iconic “LOVE” sculpture that radiates against the glittering nighttime city lights. This captivating vista continues to set the scene at the terracotta terrace, the picturesque ceremony site. A tree-lined path across the terrace flows into the Vine Room. Here, a rustic fireplace, offbeat chandeliers, and dark oak floors foster an inviting atmosphere while floor-to-ceiling windows and open doors capture the sunset, the hanging moon, and the swell of warm breezes.
